The Sunflowers

Poem by Mary Oliver

Come with me
into the field of sunflowers.
Their faces are burnished disks,
their dry spines

creak like ship masts,
their green leaves,
so heavy and many,
fill all day with the sticky

sugars of the sun.
Come with me
to visit the sunflowers,
they are shy

but want to be friends;
they have wonderful stories
of when they were young -
the important weather,

the wandering crows.
Don't be afraid
to ask them questions!
Their bright faces,

which follow the sun,
will listen, and all
those rows of seeds -
each one a new life!

hope for a deeper acquaintance;
each of them, though it stands
in a crowd of many,
like a separate universe,

is lonely, the long work
of turning their lives
into a celebration
is not easy. Come

and let us talk with those modest faces,
the simple garments of leaves,
the coarse roots in the earth
so uprightly burning.

We had a real summer this year! There have been plenty of warm days, warm breezes and plenty of sunshine!
I made a few very summer cards – simple and colourful!

Exploding Box

This is the first exploding box I made as a present for my best friend. She likes it …Hurray! I filled this box with a photos of her beautiful family and decorated each page with a quilled flowers. There are "flying" butterflies in a middle and a birthday message in a little book.

Purple/Blue Coneflowers and Pink/White Daisy Arrangement in a Frame

My framed quilled compositions with coneflowers were inspired by Claire Sun-ok Choi's book "The Art of Paper Quilling". Making coneflowers were challenging but I enjoyed it.
White daisies were made by rolling strips of white paper around chopstick.
Pink daisies were made using simple “teadrop” shapes.

Violets and Butterfly

This is an original design item made in a technique known as paper quilling or paper filigree. It features violets and a butterfly.
Violets are one of my favourite flowers. They have so many names – Heartsease, Wild Pansy, Bird’s Eye, and Cuddle Me etc.
Violets are called Flowers of Modesty because they hide their flowers in the heart-shaped leaves.
There are many legends and stories about Violets. People say if you send violets to someone you are sending them a message of love, humility, modesty, resurrection, spring, and immortal soul.
